When Eugene Burnett, a Black WWII veteran, tried to use his GI Bill-guaranteed mortgage to buy a house in Levittown, New York in 1949, he was turned away. "The neighborhood isn't open to Black residents," the salesman told him. His wife, Bernice, remembers: "It was as though it wasn't real...And then for them to tell me
